No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
