On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
