Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to question particular decisions from the official, echoing the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
